Jan Dekkers studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, where he was taught by Charles Eyck, Charles Vos, and Joep Nicolas. After completing his studies, he worked for a time in Nicolas’s studio. As an artist, he was involved in painting (both canvases and murals), stained glass, ceramics, drawing, and sculpture. He was also active as an illustrator, contributing to publications such as the Utrechts Nieuwsblad. In 1963, he created sixty drawings for the book Groningen, City and Region by A. Boerma.

Following studies in oceanography and hydrography, Dekkers worked from 1964 to 1969 in Bremen, including as a port expert. He later settled in De Hilte, in the province of Drenthe. In the municipality of Aa en Hunze, three sculptures by his hand—made of cement—can be found.

Dekkers never exhibited his work during his lifetime. It wasn’t until 2004/2005 that the Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam held a retrospective of his work. In August 2011, an art route featuring his work was organized in Gieterveen and Gieten. His pieces were displayed in several locations, including the small church ’t Kleine Kerkje in Gieterveen.
