What is it like to fly a Chinook helicopter during a military operation?
In Mission Chinook, former Royal Netherlands Air Force pilot Maarten Vissers gives an open account of his experiences in the cockpit during eight military deployments. He transported troops and equipment through areas affected by conflict, including Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, where situations could change quickly and decisions often had to be made under pressure.
Vissers started his flight training with the Royal Netherlands Air Force at the age of nineteen. He later became a Chinook pilot with 298 Squadron and eventually a commander. In this book, he looks back on the critical moments of his career and the challenges of operating one of the Dutch armed forces’ most recognisable helicopters.
The stories are not only about flying and military operations. They also show the importance of cooperation, communication and leadership when people have to work together in difficult circumstances.
Mission Chinook offers a personal view of military aviation and the people behind the missions. It provides an insight into what happens inside the cockpit when a helicopter and its crew are called upon to operate in a conflict zone.
