“The Hague School” is a collective term for a group of painters who worked in The Hague between about 1860 and 1890. They defined themselves in opposition to the established academic artists, who idealised reality. The Hague School painters, who included Jozef Israëls, the brothers Maris, and Anton Mauve, instead strove for the greatest possible realism and worked outdoors whenever they could. Rendering the light and atmosphere of a landscape was of central importance to them. At first, Hague School painters had a fairly sombre palette, composed largely of grey tones, but they later began using lighter hues and looser brushwork. Their works, mostly landscapes and marine paintings, are renowned for the beauty of their light and atmosphere.
