Nowadays we mainly know the Nieuwe Kerk on Amsterdam’s Dam as a national church, where May 4 commemorations, royal inaugurations and major exhibitions take place.

But the Nieuwe Kerk has a history of more than six centuries. Six centuries in which Amsterdam residents built, embellished and restored the church, had their children baptized there, buried relatives, listened to sermons and whispered prayers.

The book De Nieuwe Kerk of Amsterdam, edited by Gert Eijkelboom and Gabri van Tussenbroek, offers the reader a journey through that rich history, from the very beginning in the Middle Ages, through the conversion of a Roman Catholic parish church to a Protestant church in 1578, the dramatic fire and restoration of the church in the mid-seventeenth century, to the Church of Royal Ceremonies and World Press Photo.
