Atlas of Mokum (Atlas van Mokum)
€37,95
To this day, Jewish life remains deeply connected to the growth and development of the city of Amsterdam and to the lives of non-Jewish Amsterdammers, who refer to the capital as “Mokum” as a matter of course. This atlas shows the places where they settle, the way in which they help shape the city – sometimes literally – how they gain a position in urban society and their relationships with each other and with other city dwellers.
The history of Jewish Amsterdam is eventful, with periods of peace and prosperity, friendships, but also conflicts and anti-Semitism, culminating in the murder of three-quarters of the 80,000 Jewish Amsterdammers during the German occupation. Atlas of Mokum is a story of the ups and downs of Jewish life in Amsterdam in all its diversity throughout the centuries. A common thread running through this book is that in every area, whether religion or political preference, Jewish Amsterdammers have always been as diverse and divided as their non-Jewish fellow citizens.
