Isabella, Simon Maris, c. 1906

Formerly, the young girl in this portrait was labeled as an ‘East Indian type’. In the meantime, research has revealed that her first name was actually Isabella. This identification came about through photographs and references found in Maris’ archive. She was about twelve years old when she posed for her portrait in the artist’s studio on Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.
