In Amsterdam, between 1893 and 1896, the famous Dutch painter George Hendrik Breitner made a series of paintings of girls in Japanese kimonos. This series became widely known and is very popular today.
The paintings are remarkable for their use of bright colours in the representation of the rich silks. They look timeless because of the sharply contrasting colours and the almost graphical composition.
The model that frequently sat for Breitner in a kimono was Geesje Kwak, a slender working girl of seventeen.
