The sculpture is based on the Venus de Milo: one of the most famous works of Greek sculpture. It was created between 130 and 100 BC and represents Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Based on an inscription on the plinth, it is assumed to be a work by Alexandros of Antioch. The statue is named after the Greek island of Milos, where it was discovered.
