The work of Hong Kong illustrator Karen Aruba is featured in the exhibition Made in China. Karen Aruba designed this special edition of Mahjong tiles for the Wereldmuseum, showcasing blended cityscapes of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Her father, Ricky Cheung, hand-carved the outer tile with the characters helan 荷蘭, meaning “the Netherlands.” With her contemporary designs, Karen Aruba aims to promote and preserve the traditional Hong Kong craft of Mahjong tile carving.
A blend of craft and artistry, this gift helps reignite the dying art of hand-carved craftsmanship in Hong Kong, creatively preserving mahjong art. Intended primarily for collecting and decorative purposes rather than the game playing, the Travel Mahjong City collection is one of the Hong Kong Smart Design Award-winning products, celebrating unique design and aesthetic appeal
