Etty Hillesum was impressed by her experiences of silence, infinite space and freedom when she walked along the river IJssel. In her diaries and letters she refers often to the IJssel. She tells about her experiences of peace, spaciousness and freedom in the landscape. The descriptions of the IJssel landscape also play an important role in the reflections on her own inner self.
