Dutch filmmaker and columnist Theo van Gogh was born in The Hague in 1957. He was a strong advocate of freedom of expression in words and images, often known for his provocative use of crude humor. Theo van Gogh was murdered by Mohammed B. on November 2, 2004, near his home in Amsterdam.
This portrait was taken at his house in Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer neighbourhood on February 25, 2002 and commissioned by the magazine Strictly.
Theo van Gogh initially agreed to an interview with the magazine Strictly and a portrait session at Jocelyne Moreau’s photo studio. However, he later changed his plans, deciding to write the article himself and submit it to the magazine, opting not to go to the studio for the portrait. Instead, he invited the photographer to his home that same evening. When Jocelyne Moreau arrived, van Gogh was distracted, watching TV and smoking, and eventually fell asleep during the photo shoot.
