The Venice of the North captured in painting
Dordrecht is among the most painted cities in our country. Its picturesque location on the water, the historical importance of Holland’s oldest city and its reputation as the birthplace of Aelbert Cuyp have contributed to its great appeal to numerous domestic and foreign artists over the centuries.
Some of the most beautiful, oldest and largest cityscapes concern Dordrecht. The city was often seen as the Venice of the North. Extremely recognizable by the unfinished, stubby tower of the Grote Kerk. An island surrounded by rivers. Jan van Goyen painted Dordrecht more often than other cities. J.M.W. Turner recognized the city from Cuyp’s paintings. Eugène Boudin encountered “a veritable colony of artists. Johan Barthold Jongkind considered Dordrecht the most beautiful city in the Netherlands.
