Self-portrait van Gogh

Van Gogh decided to move to Paris in 1886, after hearing from his brother Theo about the new, colourful French style of painting. He immediately started experimenting with this new style in several self-portraits. He did mostly self-portraits to save costs by avoiding to pay for models. In the winter of 1887-1888 he painted this self-portrait. Using striking colours and rhythmic brushes he painted himself as a fashionably dressed Parisian.

Rijksmuseum

The fame of the masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum’s collections makes it one of the most famous museums in the world. Just think of the magnetic appeal of works like The Milkmaid by Vermeer, Self-portrait by Van Gogh, The Merry Family by Jan Steen, Rembrandt’s Night Watch and, of course, Marten and Oopjen. But there are many other pieces in the collection that could take you by surprise and capture your imagination. Some other highlights from the museum include the Gallery of Honour with masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Jan Steen; the collection of doll’s houses, model ships and armoury; and the Cuypers Library, which houses the oldest and biggest collection of art history books in the Netherlands. And don’t forget the captivating works of Breitner and the Asian Pavilion!

No matter how old you are, or where you’re from, you’ll discover something new at the Rijksmuseum. And for that, you don’t even need to leave your chair – the museum features a wide range of online exhibitions and digitally accessible works of art.
