The precursor of chess as we know it today originated in India at the beginning of the 7th century. Within a few centuries, the game spread through Persia to Europe and eventually conquered the whole world.
The first chess pieces were based on the parts of an Indian army: foot soldiers, horsemen, elephants and chariots. Over time, not only the pieces themselves, but also the rules of the game have changed. For example, in the original version there were elephants, but no queen. She only appeared in the Middle Ages as a replacement for the king’s counselor.
Chess pieces were first carved from ivory or bone. Later they were turned from wood and nowadays they are made from all kinds of materials: ceramic, metal, plastic and… paper.
