Miffy (Dutch: Nijntje) is a fictional rabbit appearing in a series of picture books drawn and written by Dutch artist Dick Bruna. The original Dutch name, “Nijntje”, is a shortening of the diminutive konijntje, “little rabbit”. Melanie and Boris are her best friends.
For the portrait of Isabella, Maris first took photos of the young woman. Thanks to those photos and other documents in Maris’ archive, we know that she was about twelve years old when she posed. Maris made several portraits of her, sometimes entitled Isabella, just like the painting on which Melanie’s clothing is based.
