At the beginning of the previous century, there were artists who wanted to renew art. A lot was changing at that time, the world was rapidly becoming ‘modern’. They thought that art was lagging behind. Why continue to make paintings that look real, when you could also take a photo with the new technology?
Paintings, buildings, toys and furniture that fit in with the new era, that was what they wanted. Everything designed with simple means. Rectangular surfaces, red, blue and yellow. Black, white and grey were also possible. And clear, straight lines. Their ideas came together in a new magazine that was given the name De Stijl. De Stijl wanted a new art for a new world and a hundred years later it still points the way.
Joost Swarte chose ten artists who were part of De Stijl or were influenced by it. He depicts their studios and how they worked, in a tribute that shows what makes these artists, architects and designers unforgettable.
