Pyramid-shaped containers for flowers represent the very apogee of Delft blue pottery.
The taller vases were constructed by piling several containers on top of each other. The containers had a spout at each of their four corners. This mini tulip vase is shaped like an obelisk. The sems of the flowers can be inserted through the spouts straight into the watercontainer at the bottom.
Most flower pyramids were produced in Delft in the late 17th century and commisioned by Queen Marry II, wife of William III, Stadholder of Holland and King of England 1688-1702. Her love of flowers, gardens and Delft blue pottery led to the production of a variety of flower containers, which found a home in her many palaces in Holland and England.
