Where do we come from?
Paleontology is fun and exciting – we can shiver from a safe distance at the thought of the predatory monsters of yore – but what good is it anyway? “In all cultures, through all times, you can see the deep-rooted fascination in the question of where we come from,” says Anne Schulp. “That’s how I see my field. Like astronomy, it poses a fundamental question that concerns us all: where do we come from?” It is also an accessible and understandable field, which for many people provides the first acquaintance with science. In addition, paleontology contributes to our knowledge of current themes such as sea level rise, climate change and biodiversity.
