Reading performance: Iven Cudogham about Anansi the spider (in Dutch)
The folk tales about the spider Anansi are centuries old. They are about a spider that time and again outsmarts its opponents. Those who are not big and strong must be smart, is the message.
The fairy tales originate from West Africa and ended up in Suriname, Curaçao and the Caribbean as a result of slavery. There, too, they were passed on and adapted again and again. Everyone there knows them, while in the Netherlands and Europe far fewer people have heard of Anansi.
Iven Cudogham wants to introduce all Dutch children to Anansi and does so through an animation series, an exhibition in the Tropenmuseum and through children’s books.
