Alongside the familiar feature “A Fine Piece” and a selection of book reviews, this year’s almanac once again brings us the popular “10 x” feature — this time exploring ten remarkable grave monuments.

The 38th edition also takes us into the history of secondary education in Veendam, revealing how several teachers from that era went on to make their mark in the world of academia. We meet the followers and fellow thinkers of Domela Nieuwenhuis, and discover the story of a noble yet ultimately unsuccessful dream: the pursuit of a cooperative world.

An estate inventory provides the starting point for another extensive and fascinating article. And the almanac does not stop at the more distant past. Recent history also comes vividly to life — from the kniepertjes of Westers Bakery, which closed its doors in 2025, to memories of working at the post office in an age when carrying bags filled with cash from one post office to another was simply part of the job.
