In the early morning of D-Day June 6, 1944, a gigantic Allied fleet appeared off the coast of Normandy. An American flag fluttered at the front of the many hundreds of craft. After the battle, this flag was taken to the United States by ship captain Howard Vander Beek. He proudly kept the badly battered flag for years. After the death of the captain, a Dutchman managed to get possession of the long-lost flag. Bert Kreuk, whose Rotterdam family experienced intense wartime suffering, had a plan. He wanted to return the historic flag to the American people on behalf of the liberated countries. That idea grew into a special mission in which even the American president became involved. King Willem Alexander, the Prime Minister, various ministers, an army of defense specialists and a procession of officials are also committed to the safe return of the flag. This book tells the extraordinary history of the flag, from the day it was made to its reception at the White House. It takes the reader, like fly on the wall, on the government plane to the offices of the American president, places where outsiders are rarely welcome.
