Aert Schouman was born in Dordrecht in 1710. At the age of fifteen, Aert Schouman was apprenticed to fellow townsman and painter Adriaen van der Burg. In his later years, Schouman would alternate living between Dordrecht and The Hague, where he would school many apprentices himself, including his cousin Martinus Schouman.
In 1736, Schouman founded the Brotherhood of Saint Luke, an association of art lovers and amateurs. In the 1750s, he also became the chairman of the Pictura painters’ brotherhood in The Hague for four years.
Schouman’s oeuvre is relatively small and consists mainly of portraits and large wall paintings. Besides painting, he also dedicated himself to (glass) engraving. Schouman was a versatile artist: in the early phase of his career he dedicated himself mainly to painting biblical and mythological themes, while in his later years he would switch to painting birds. His bird paintings stand out due to their creative decoration and his excellent portrayal of both Dutch and exotic bird species.
