Long before the term ‘queer scene’ came into use, they added color to the city—not just gays and lesbians, but also trans people, cross-dressers, and drag queens—by living, working, and socializing there in search of happiness, freedom, and a safe haven. Slurs were reclaimed as badges of honor, and a rainbow community emerged from the devastating AIDS crisis—a broad anti-discrimination coalition standing for love and tolerance.
*Queer Amsterdam – Atlas of the Pink City* tells the capital’s LGBTQIA+ history through dozens of stories—often moving and courageous, yet also filled with humor and fun. It is a comprehensive work dedicated to all those who have fought, and continue to fight, for the right to be themselves in the city. This book is published to coincide with WorldPride and the major exhibition *Queer Amsterdam: The Pink City* at De Nieuwe Kerk. Its creation would have been impossible without the generous cooperation of one of the most remarkable heritage organizations in existence: IHLIA LGBTI Heritage.
