Dioni ten Busschen has been experimenting for years with the design, color, and functionality of peat and peat moss, pushing boundaries in the process.
Her work has resulted in a range of original art and design objects crafted from peat. It’s truly unique how she brings her sculptures to life using this material, giving them a contemporary aesthetic.
Her peat capercaillies are particularly striking. The call of the capercaillie—a nearly extinct bird species—once echoed across the vast Bourtanger Moor. With their magnificent plumage, they left a lasting impression.
Thanks to the experimental artist grant from the Mondriaan Fund, Dioni was commissioned for a new project. The guiding theme: be inspired by faith and superstition.
Working and sculpting peat into stunning images, paintings, and sculptures is a true labor of love—almost monastic in its dedication.
