Anyone driving through the Groningen Peat Colonies today can hardly believe how important maritime transport played in the 19th century. More than 60% of the seagoing fleet at the time came from places like Veendam, Wildervank, Oude- and Nieuwe Pekela, and Gasselternijveen, located in the Drenthe Peat Colonies. We have made a selection of ship portraits held by museums and private individuals. Often brought as souvenirs from far-off lands, but sometimes painted by a local artist commissioned by a proud helmsman or captain. There must have been thousands of them, as almost every captain had his ship painted as a portrait in the front room to accompany the sometimes tall tales.
This book describes more than 90 ship portraits of ships that sailed in the province of Groningen. The illustrations are based on ship portraits from museums and private collections.
