The 19th century saw the emergence of various neo-styles that harked back to a glorious past. These included Neoclassicism, Neo-Gothic, and various eclectic hybrids. Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau (New Art), aimed to break with this tradition and utilize new techniques. There was room for ornamentation in flowing lines in doors and windows, inspired by nature. The interior design of the building often reflected its exterior. Due to renovations, many interior details of buildings that still exist today were lost, but fortunately, there is a revival. Sometimes buildings are restored with a keen eye for detail. There is renewed interest in Jugendstil, including the earthenware and porcelain designed in the same period, and not to forget the printing press. This book introduces you to a fine selection of monuments in East Groningen in which Jugendstil plays a prominent role.
