On July 1, more and more Dutch people celebrate Keti Koti. On this day, attention is paid to the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the former Netherlands Antilles. In 2023 that will be one hundred and fifty years ago and in recent years more and more voices have been raised to make Keti Koti an official public holiday. Writer Janice Deul is also strongly in favor of this. Our slavery past is a complex and sensitive subject. The reactions to Rutte’s apologies have once again exposed this. It is precisely for this reason that it is fundamental that we all reflect on this period in history.
