Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the world’s first fully accessible art depot. Rotterdam’s brand-new Depot starts the year with the opening of a webshop at Dutch Museum Gift Shop, following its spectacular opening in November 2021.
The museum shop has various unique and exclusive items in its range. Silver is a recurring theme in many of these, which is based on the beautiful facade of the building.
In store are unique mugs by MVRDV, the designer of the depot. Winy Maas is co-founder of the Rotterdam architectural firm MVRDV and was inspired by an aluminum-coloured Ikea bowl for the shape of the silver-coloured building. This Blanda Blank, a slightly shiny serving bowl, happened to be on the table as a sugar bowl during preliminary discussions about the design. The ‚Depot x MVRDV Silver Cups‚ are inspired by on the scaled technical drawing of the depot. The cup has a reflective silver glaze and is made of porcelain. And if the cup breaks, you can always repair it with the silver colored New Kintsugi Repair Kit.
Other items are the depot shaped Christmas ornaments in the colors: silver, silver pink, gold, and silver blue. The colors are inspired by the corporate identity for the store by Thonik, who got inspired by the lighting of the entrance hall designed by John Körmeling. The bright spring colors make them, beside the Christmas tree, beautiful objects in the living room.
In addition to T-shirts and hoodies, there are also depot socks. And of course, catalogs such as Collection book Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Best of Boijmans: Highlights of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen are available.
The collaboration with the well-known Rotterdam designer Susan Bijl gives the silver theme extra shine. Susan designed a bag for the depot as an ode to the iconic art depot. The silver and gray bag made of recycled nylon, called: ‚The New Shopping bag Mirror & Agaat‚ (2020), now also called the ‚depot bag‘, reflects the light just like the mirrors and the color of the actual building.
The bag was for sale during the Silver Opening, the construction preview of the depot, last September and now also in the web shop. The shopping bag is a typical Rotterdam design, the first version of which was designed in 2000.
Since then, five different versions have been made, eventually leading to the bag, which is also available in silver. The five prototypes will soon be included in the museum’s collection. In addition to the bag, a pouch, strap and laptop sleeve have been designed.
The range of the museum shop will be refreshed regularly, in line with the upcoming exhibitions. For example, there will soon be a tool belt designed for the depot of Anouk x Vera. Keep an eye on the webshop!
