The decoration of this small trug is based on the folk art of Hindeloopen, a small coastal town in Friesland. It used to be an important trading port; as one of the Hansa towns it sent its ships to Scandinavia. Later, as a member of the Dutch East India Company it focused on the Far East. As a result its folk art reflects both Norse and Indian styles and motifs.
The distinctive, basic colours used in Hindeloopen painting are dark green, oxblood, ochre, Prussian blue and cream. The flowers, twirls and wavy lines on this trug are done in shadow work, which traditionally has a limited colour scheme.
The construction of the trug has its origins in the Middle Ages when this particular shape was produced from thin strips of wood, especially in England. The way the strips overlap resembles the shipbuilding method of Viking ships. In England a largeer version of the trug is still very popular as gardening basket.
