The Tropenmuseum is a museum about world cultures, housed in one of the most beautiful museum buildings in the Netherlands. The impressive national monument located on the Oosterpark, in the heart of Amsterdam East, dates from 1926
The imposing central Light Hall offers a wide view of what the museum has to offer: an extensive permanent exhibition and regularly changing exhibitions in which the objects each tell a human story. Stories about universal human themes such as mourning, celebrating, decorating, praying or fighting. They arouse curiosity about the enormous cultural diversity of the world. In the Tropenmuseum you will discover that apart from the differences, we are all the same: human beings.
With the opening of the permanent exhibition Things That Matter in 2018, the Tropenmuseum has let go of the geographical division and shifted the focus to universal themes that connect people worldwide. Current social issues such as migration and origin play a prominent role in this. Committed exhibitions such as Present of the Slavery Past and Longing for Mecca, together with major crowd pullers such as What a Genderful World, the many current public programs and the successful Tropenmuseum Junior, ensure annual growth in visitor numbers.
Tropenmuseum Junior is the children’s museum of the Tropenmuseum and the oldest children’s museum in the Netherlands. When you enter Tropenmuseum Junior, you step into a different world.
Tropenmuseum Junior is known for its appealing museum concept (see, touch, experience and participate) and its general objective is to stimulate an open view of the world.
