With the opening of the permanent exhibition Things That Matter in 2018, the Tropenmuseum has let go of the geographical division and shifted the focus to universal themes that connect people worldwide. Current social issues such as migration and origin play a prominent role in this. Committed exhibitions such as Present of the Slavery Past and Longing for Mecca, together with major crowd pullers such as What a Genderful World, the many current public programs and the successful Tropenmuseum Junior, ensure annual growth in visitor numbers.
