About the original work
In “De Grijze Boom” (The Gray Tree), Mondrian returns the subject, the tree, to its essence. The influence of Cubism is enormous. During his short visit to Paris, Cubism was already the talk of the town, but no work by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque – the most important representatives of Cubism – was on display. It can be seen at an exhibition in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum in the autumn of 1911, which Mondriaan co-organised. Then the Dutch painters also discover what Cubism entails. For example, there is no longer literal symbolism that determines the meaning of a painting. Instead, the color and line do this.
