About the original work
Van Gogh painted these peasant women in the Drenthe village of Nieuw-Amsterdam. In the autumn of 1883 he stayed there for two months. The women are at work, probably collecting dried peat sods. Van Gogh was fascinated by simple country life. For more than two years he had been busy ‘researching & drawing’ farm life.
He changed his mind a few times while painting Two Women in the Peat. For example, we know from research that he first painted four figures instead of two.
