About the original work
At first glance, this painting appears to be a jumble of bright colors and whimsical, abstract shapes. Only then do you see that it represents a slope with tree trunks and roots. They are coppice trees on top of a marl quarry, such as could be found around Auvers. The work is not quite finished. That explains the unfinished character. It is probably Van Gogh’s very last painting. Andries Bonger, brother-in-law of brother Theo, described it in a letter: ‘The morning before his death he had painted a sousbois, full of sun and life.’
