About the original work
Sowers kept Van Gogh busy throughout his artistic life. In total he made more than thirty drawings and paintings with the same theme. He painted this sower in the autumn of 1888. Van Gogh was working with Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) at the time. He thought that he should work less from reality, and more from his imagination.
Van Gogh used colors here to express emotion and passion. He gave the leading role to the green-yellow of the sky and the purple of the field. The bright yellow sun looks like a halo, which makes the sower a saint.
