About the original work

The old hut under a red evening sky gives an idyllic picture of farm life. Van Gogh also called these simple farmhouses ‘people’s nests’. He saw security in it. This hut consisted of two dwellings, with two front doors and a shared chimney. It was a type that was on the verge of disappearing at the time. “The case struck me exceedingly, those two half-destroyed huts under the same thatched roof remind me of a few old decrepit folks who make up only one being and are seen supporting each other,” he wrote.

The subject continued to fascinate him. Four years later, in France, he painted and drew old houses again. Over the years, his painting style had changed considerably: he now painted them in bright colors and with a loose brushstroke.
