About the original work
Van Gogh painted this flower still life on simple painter’s cardboard, with quick, loose brush strokes. It is one of many studies in which he tested the effect of certain colors on each other. His brother Theo wrote to their mother: ‘He mainly paints flowers, especially with the aim of making his next paintings more fresh in color.’
Van Gogh received flowers from acquaintances every week, according to Theo. This was one of the first bouquets he tackled, many more would follow.
