About the original work

Van Gogh painted this seascape on the beach on the spot, as evidenced by grains of sand found in the layers of paint. He made the work in the fishing village of Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, during a trip he undertook from Arles (southern France).

In addition to the blue and white that he brushed onto the canvas with bold strokes, he also used the colors green and yellow for the waves. He applied this with a palette knife, so that the effect of light through the waves was beautifully struck.

Van Gogh was enthusiastic about the colors of the Mediterranean. He described it as “a color like mackerel, that is, changing – you don’t always know if it’s green or purple, you don’t always know if it’s blue – because a second later the ever-changing reflection has a pinkish or gray hue.” accepted.’ The bright red signature is prominently placed in the foreground: it was supposed to be a ‘red note in green’.
