About the original work

The dark structure in the middle of the drawing looks like a hut, but it is a pile of peat. In Drenthe, peat was piled up in the shape of a house with a sloping roof. Van Gogh gave the peat heap a central place in the composition and had it reflected in the ditch.

At dusk, the fields of Drenthe changed into a ‘sublime’ place, according to Van Gogh, ‘when that vast, sun-scorched crust comes out dark against the fine lilac tones of the evening sky, and the dark blue very last line on the horizon the ground separates from the sky’, he wrote to his brother Theo.
