About the original work
This skeleton with a lit cigarette is a student joke. Van Gogh painted it while he was taking lessons at the Antwerp art academy, early 1886. The painting shows that he had a good command of anatomy.
Drawing skeletons was a common exercise at the academy. But painting it was not on the agenda. He will have done that at another time, between classes, or afterwards.
About the artist
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Born in 1853 in the Netherlands, Van Gogh began his career as an art dealer before deciding to paint at the age of 27.
