About the original work
Hutten painted Van Gogh in 1883, when he was staying in the Drenthe village of Nieuw-Amsterdam. Enthusiastically, he wrote to his brother Theo how “unspeakably beautiful” he thought it was there. According to him, this was ‘totally impossible to see’ at studies such as de Hutten. He still had a lot to learn. Here he practiced contrasting a dark foreground against a light sky.
There is a lot of sand in the paint of this painting. It was blowing in when Van Gogh made it outside. If you zoom in you can see the grains light up in the dark paint.
