Between 1818 and 1960, 8 meters of peat was excavated in Veenhuizen. Although this peat layer has almost disappeared, the soil is still peaty enough to give the water in the ditches of Veenhuizen a deep brown color. Thomas Trum has extracted the pigments responsible for this discoloration from the soil and used it to produce an ink.
