About the artist
Thérèse Schwartze (1851-1918) can be considered the most successful female Dutch artist of her time. As a portraitist she received many commissions from the Amsterdam elite and even from the royal family.
Schwarte also worked on her career outside the Netherlands. She regularly stayed in Paris, including in 1884. In her Parisian studio she made many studies of Italian models.
About the original work
Woman with Sunflowers was probably painted by Schwartze after returning to the Netherlands in 1885. The characteristic dress of the woman indicates that Schwartze has once again depicted an Italian model here. While this young woman poses with a wide basket full of sunflowers, she looks invitingly at the viewer. The deep colors of the painting make it a beautifully warm work.
