About the original work
The Drenthe Museum acquired The Drenthe Madonna, a stop piece by Israëls, in 2018. The painting depicts a young Drenthe mother with a child, sitting on a bench in the landscape. A Madonna is a popular subject in painting and depicts Mary, usually with the child Jesus on her lap or in her arms. Israëls made a Drenthe version of this, with a farmer’s woman and her child as the main characters.
Jozef Israëls was a member of the Hague School and regularly visited Drenthe. He probably painted the Drenthe Madonna in Zweeloo. He often made sketches that he later developed into paintings.
