About the original work

The dog has already spotted us. When we step over the threshold, the peace will be disturbed by his barking. Then the reading boy will look up from his book and he will also notice us. Samuel van Hoogstraten specialized in performances that appear deceptively real. In this life-size perspective piece (of which the original is almost 2.5 meters high) we look through a passage into a palace, where a fire is burning in the cellar. The golden gate is a fine example of the skilfully imitated lighting. Along the colonnade and through the doorway we catch a glimpse of an expansive garden.

About the Artist

Samuel van Hoogstraten (2 August 1627 in Dordrecht – 19 October 1678 in Dordrecht) was a Dutch painter, etcher, poet and theorist.

Van Hoogstraten first apprenticed with his father Dirk van Hoogstraten. After the death of his father, he worked as an apprentice in Rembrandt’s studio between 1640 and 1648. His style is easily recognizable in his drawings. From 1651 to 1654 he worked in Germany and Vienna and from 1662 to 1666 in London. He then went back to his hometown of Dordrecht where he lived until his death.

Additional information

This painting by Samuel van Hoogstraten is reproduced as a Giclée with an advanced 12-color printer that sprays the pigment inks onto the canvas or paper, layer by layer. Due to this large color spectrum and the high resolution, the original is approached very closely.
The pigment inks used are UV-resistant, so that no discoloration can occur. The colors always remain beautiful and that is why we give an unlimited guarantee! You can order Giclees framed and unframed.
