Twenty expert researchers, lecturers and writers provide the accessible texts. And they are provided with beautiful illustrations, mainly from the natural history collections of the University of Amsterdam, which are managed by the Allard Pierson.
In Stories of Nature, vulnerable nature shows itself in all its splendor. Of various species, only the paper image can be shown here. They no longer exist. This publication is a monument to those plants and animals. Let this book, together with the exhibition, be a call to put a stop to the extinction of all that unique flora and fauna.
Hans Mulder is trained as a historian and works as a curator at the Allard Pierson Artis Library of the University of Amsterdam. He publishes on the history of the book and natural history, subjects on which he also teaches at the University of Amsterdam. Mulder received the Jan Wolkers Prize in 2021 for his beautiful book ‘The Discovery of Nature’. The jury praised the ‘book that will remain on the shelf for years to come as a new classic’. Mulder illustrated the stories with exceptionally beautiful pictures from the Allard Pierson Artis Library.
