The oeuvre of the painter Martin Monnickendam (1874-1943) is strongly connected to Amsterdam, the city where he lived and worked. Monnickendam never joined a movement or a group of painters. He always chose his own path, and in doing so used a style of painting that was very recognizably his own. By consistently focusing on Amsterdam in his choice of subject, an oeuvre was created that provides a unique image of the richly varied cultural and religious life in Amsterdam in the first half of the twentieth century.
