In the last weeks of his life, Van Gogh made a number of impressive paintings of the wheatfields around Auvers. This vast field under a dark sky is one of them.
In these landscapes he tried to express ‘sadness, extreme loneliness’. However, the overwhelming emotions Van Gogh experienced in nature were also positive. He wrote to brother Theo: ‘I am almost certain that I have expressed in those canvases what I cannot express in words, namely how healthy and heart-strengthening I find the countryside’.
The elongated format of Wheatfield under thunderclouds is unusual. It emphasizes the vastness of the landscape, as does the simple composition: two horizontal planes.
About the artist
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Born in 1853 in the Netherlands, Van Gogh began his career as an art dealer before deciding to paint at the age of 27.
