About the original work

In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms in a house on the Place Lamartine in Arles (southern France). In the painting he made of this square, his house can be recognized by the green shutters. Shortly after moving into the Yellow House, he sent Theo a description and a sketch of his painting of the house: “It’s awe-inspiring, those yellow houses in the sun and then the incomparable brightness of the blue.”

In this work, which he himself called ‘The Street’, Van Gogh depicted his immediate surroundings. On the left you can see the restaurant where he often went to eat. The house of his friend, the postman Joseph Roulin was beyond the second railway bridge.

With the Yellow House, Van Gogh had found a place where he could not only paint but also let friends stay. He wanted to turn this yellow corner building into an artists’ house, where like-minded painters could live and work together.
