About the original work

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is impressed by the province he gets to know in the autumn of 1883: ‘Drenthe is so beautiful, it has such a profound effect on me’. This performance, which he puts on the canvas in quick strokes in one go, gives Van Gogh artistic self-awareness. In this period he finally decides to become an artist.

Van Gogh shows here the path he will take with his art: as a painter of peasant life, inspired by Jean-François Millet, he wants to show people on the land in their struggle for daily existence.

His letters show that he painted at least eighteen studies during his stay in Hoogeveen and subsequently New Amsterdam / Veenoord and Zweeloo, but the majority of these have been lost. Today, only five paintings are attributed to the Drenthe period, De turfschuit being one of them. All Drenthe paintings are in Dutch public collections. In addition to The Turf Barge, the Drents Museum and the Van Gogh Museum also own the painting Farmer Burning Weeds. The collection of the Van Gogh Museum contains three other works from Van Gogh’s Drenthe period.
